Compartmentalizing maybe our greatest tool for survival. Pain, joy, misery, we learn at different points in our life how to tackle all these things effectively. When were not able to accomplish this, we learn to remove it or set it on one of the many dusty bookshelves of our mind. Possibly later we can pull that volume off the shelf and sort it out.
